How to Personalize Your Plate

MyPlate is a visual way to help us eat a balanced diet from all of the food groups. The goal is to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, protein sources, grains, and dairy or soy fortified alternatives to fit your culture and lifestyle.

Choose nutrient dense options to make every bite count! Nutrient dense means foods naturally high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber and low in saturated fat and added sugars. These are food such as nuts, fruit, vegetables, and whole grains.

Asking yourself some simple questions when you’re planning your meal will help you achieve a balanced diet:

Start with what you love.

I love all things pasta

What is our grain? Can we substitute to make it a whole grain?

I can use whole wheat pasta

What are some colorful veggies to add? The more the better!

Hmm…I like broccoli. Fresh basil and tomatoes would go well with that also. Maybe some zucchini, too.

Is there a fruit you could add in or to the side?

Fruit salad really would be delicious. I’l have that on the side tonight.

Can you add a lean protein? Keep it around 3 oz.

I can toss in some strips of chicken. This is sounding really yummy!

What about a low-fat dairy?

Parmesan cheese would be delicious.
