Equipment

  • pan or skillet
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Can opener
  • Knife

Ingredients

  • 1 lb 93% Lean ground turkey
  • 1 Onion chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 can low sodium diced tomatoes
  • 2 cans no-salt-added kidney beans
  • 1 can condensed tomato soup low sodium if available

Instructions

  • Wash hands with soap and water.
  • Chop onion.
  • Brown meat and onion in a large skillet or pan over medium heat (350°F).
  • Drain grease. To remove more fat after draining rinse your ground meat under warm running water. Return meat and onion to skillet after rinsing.
  • Add chili powder and stir. Cook for 3-5minutes.
  • Add tomatoes, drained and rinsed beans, and tomato soup.
  • Add 1 soup can of water; stir and simmer for at least 30 minutes.
  • Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.

Notes

  • Use any ground meat (beef, chicken, or turkey). Look for meats with less than 15% fat.
  • Try a variety of bean varieties (black, pinto, garbanzo, kidney, or others).
  • Add diced green chilies, diced hot peppers, sautéed fresh mushrooms, sautéed fresh garlic, hot pepper sauce, frozen or canned corn or extra chili powder.
  • Cook your own dry beans. One can (15 ounces) is about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cups drained beans.
  • Try adding cilantro on top for more flavor.
