Family Meal Planning

Play time, not screen time: Cut screen time to 2 hours or less a day.

Are you new to meal planning? Start small. Which meal would be easiest to plan for in advance? Breakfast may be a busy time, or difficult to plan for if household members awake at different times. Dinner tends to be the longest meal and provides a perfect opportunity to share stories about the day.

Take a look in your pantry and refrigerator first. What items do you already have on hand? A box of pasta can quickly become a meal with a red sauce, meatballs, and frozen vegetables. Supplement dried rice and beans with a bag of stir-fry vegetables, garlic, onion, and soy sauce.

Turn evening meal prep into a fun family activity. Peeling and chopping are good skills for children to practice, under adult supervision. Assign tasks and strive to include a variety of colors. Discuss the ingredients as you go, and how they could be incorporated into other recipes.
