March is National Nutrition Month®: Fuel for the Future

Each year during the month of March the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics celebrates National Nutrition Month®. The focus for the month is always on the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits. This year’s theme is Fuel for the Future which highlights that no matter your age or activity level, making healthful food and drink choices will provide your body with energy now and fuel for the future. You can ‘Fuel for the Future’ by:

  • Staying nourished and saving money by:
    • Planning your meals and snacks ahead of time.
    • Seeing what food you have at home before purchasing more.
    • Using a grocery list and shopping sales when purchasing food.
    • Learning about community resources such as SNAP, WIC, and local food banks that can help you during times of need.
  • Eating a variety of foods from all food groups.
    • Fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods and dairy all play a role in fueling our bodies.
    • Fresh, frozen, canned and dried foods can all contribute to good health.
    • Avoiding fad diets that promote unnecessary restrictions.
    • Making sure you give your body the fuel it needs.
  • Making tasty foods at home.
    • Learning cooking and meal preparation skills.
    • Trying new flavors and foods from around the world.
    • Finding creative ways to use leftovers rather than tossing them.
    • Creating happy memories by eating with friends and family when possible.
