MyPlate, Many Cultures & Traditions

Idaho is home to many different cultures with lots of delicious food traditions. No matter what foods you enjoy, they can fit into the healthy eating plan. Below are foods from around the world and how they fit into each of the 5 food groups.

Vegetables: bean sprouts, beets, bitter melon, bok choy, cabbage, callaloo, carrots, cassava, collard greens, corn, daikon, jicama, okra, radishes, peppers & chiles, squash, sweet potatoes, yucca

Fruits: banana, dragon fruit, guava, kiwi, lychee, mango, melon, orange, papaya, passion fruit, pineapple, plantain, pomegranate, tangerine, tamarind

Grains: amaranth, barley, breads (including naan, pita, roti, and tortilla), buckwheat, couscous, oats, maize, millet, quinoa, rice, teff

Proteins: beef, chicken, fish, goat, lamb, pork, poultry, shellfish, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, tempeh, tofu

Dairy: Cheese, kefir, milk (including lactose-free milk), yogurt *If you don’t include dairy foods in your diet, that’s OK! You can get the calcium needed for bone health through canned fish, soy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods. Learn more at the MyPlate Diary Gallery.
